Pendo Karate Dictionary

Terms and Definitions

Pendo - The way of learning.

Karate-do - The way of the Empty Hand

Dojo - Translates to Place of the Way. The Dojo is a very special place, therefore, at Pendo Karate our students must treat the Dojo with great respect.

Sensei - Translates to Teacher in Japanese

Sifu - Translates to Teacher in Chinese

Sempai (Senpai) - Highest ranked student in class

Tang Soo Do - The style of Martial Art our students learn primarily between White and Purple belt.

Isshin Fu - The style of Martial Art our students learn primarily between Brown and Black belt.

Belt Progression

  1. White
  2. Blue (Kinder Karate Students)
  3. Yellow
  4. Orange
  5. Green
  6. Purple
  7. Brown
  8. Senior Brown
  9. Black

Karate Outfit - Called a Gi (gee)

Kata - A detailed choreographed pattern of movements. Students must learn and memorize specific Kata for each belt.

Kiya - An expression of power and energy.

Ways of the Dojo - Affirmations recited before each class.
